The Sixth Annual Surrey Senior’s Intercultural Showcase by Luz Lopez Dee
People from various communities gathered last Saturday March 21 at Chuck Bailey Recreation Center to celebrate the Sixth Annual Intercultural Showcase. The event was organized by the Surrey Senior Planning Table to encourage communities to learn and appreciate diversity in Surrey. The City of Surrey was a partner in the event.
It was an excellent opportunity to encourage learning about diversity within Surrey.
This year’s event saw the participation of the Korean group. Food was great and the program was well organized. Dances from the Philippines, Carribean, Korea, etc. were performed to the delight of the guests. Cultural booths from Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Philippines displayed various items such as native attire from their country.
Various resource tables such as COUNCIL OF SENIOR CITIZENS ORGANIZATION OF BC (COSCO), BCResponsible Gambling, Diversecity Community Resources Society, Health Canada, Victorian Order of Nurses, Senior Support Services, Dahong Pilipino, Patient Voices Network were set up with information brochures. Awareness through events such as this bring about harmony by experiencing multiculturalism. It also allow dissemination of information of numerous services and programs provided by the City of Surrey as well as the government of Canada.
The spirit was joyful and the attendees were well fed and entertained. All in all it was a successful event. Kudos to the SURREY SENIOR PLANNING TABLE who organized the event and a million thanks to the sponsors. See you next year.
