First Filipino Sommelier in Canada
Canadian Immigrant Magazine’s recent cover issue is Arlene Oliveros, the first certified Filipino sommelier in Canada. She is also writing the first food and wine pairing book that caters to the Filipino cuisine.
Oliveros first worked as a live-in caregiver in Toronto. Then, driven by her business acumen she started a company called Care Link Homecare, providing home-based care to elder Canadians then branched into creating magnetic jewelry line.
After an extended tour to Europe with her husband, she enrolled for a college sommelier program, attended wine shows and traveled to wine regions in Canada. As a wine expert, she is now working with Prince Edward County, a wine region in Southern Ontario, helping the company market their products.
Her book will be ready for the Christmas season and is titled “Wines for Filipino Cuisines: A Gastronomic Adventure of Sommelier Arlene Oliveros.”
