A Salute to Newly Appointed Filipino Canadian Judges

To celebrate Filipino Heritage Month, the Filipino Canadian Lawyers Network – Les avocats philipino-canadiens (FCLN-RAPC) is salutes the two new judges appointed in British Columbia, that is, Justice Edlyn Laurie of the BC Supreme Court and Judge Mylene de Guzman of the BC Provincial Court.

Justice Edlyn Laurie
Before her appointment on May 27, 2024, Justice Edlyn Laurie was General Counsel at the Public Prosecution Service of Canada in Vancouver, practicing criminal and constitutional law.  Justice Laurie served on several committees within the Public Prosecution Service and was involved with the School for Prosecutors as a vice principal and faculty member. She also served as a council member for Health Quality B.C.  Justice Laurie is the first Filipino Canadian appointed to the Supreme Court of BC.

Judge Mylene de Guzman
Judge Mylene de Guzman was appointed as a Judge of the Provincial Court of BC on March 3, 2025.  Prior to her appointment she was a family law lawyer, mediator, and arbitrator in New Westminster and the Fraser Valley.  She was on the roster of Access Pro Bono lawyers, was a member of Amici Curiae Friendship Society, was president of the New West Bar Association in 2022, and,  was the first vice-president of the Canadian Bar Association (BC).  Judge Mylene de Guzman is the first Filipino Canadian to be appointed to the Provincial Court of BC.

FCLN-RAPC is proud to salute Justice Edlyn Laurie and Judge Mylene de Guzman as the first Filipino Canadians to be appointed to the judiciary in British Columbia.
